Which grades, subjects, and terms have status and growth norms?

Status norms (percentiles)

Status norms (percentiles) are available for the following subjects and grades:

  • Reading:
    •  K-12
  • Spanish Reading:
    • See user (status) norms below.
  • Course-specific mathematics:
    • See user (status) norms below.
  • Mathematics:
    • K-12
  • Language Usage:
    • 2-11
  • General Science:
    • 2-10
  • Course-specific science:
    • See user (status) norms below.

Percentiles are available for the following seasons or terms:

  • Fall (beginning of year)
  • Winter (mid-year)
  • Spring (end of year)

User (status) norms

For Spanish Reading, course-specific mathematics such as Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry, and course-specific science such as Biology/Life Sciences, we have user norms available. User norms are not a nationally representative sample. User norms are available for the following subjects and grades:

  • Spanish Reading: K-8
  • Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Integrated Mathematics 1, 2, and 3: K-12
  • Biology/Life Sciences: 8-12

Growth norms

Growth norms are available for the following subjects and grades:

  • Reading:
    • K-12
  • Spanish Reading:
    • See user (growth) norms below
  • Course-specific mathematics:
    • See user (growth) norms below
  • Mathematics:
    •  K-12
  • Language:
    •  2-11
  • General Science:
    •  2-10
  • Course-specific science:
    • See user (growth) norms below

Term pairs: Growth norms are available for the following term pairs:

  • Fall to Winter
  • Fall to Spring
  • Fall to Fall
  • Winter to Spring
  • Winter to Winter
  • Spring to Spring
  • Spring to Fall - Currently available in 2020 norms documents only; not visible on reports
  • See: normsResearchStudy.pdf (mapnwea.org) Appendix E (p. 247)

Will there be new term-to-term comparisons available in the 2025 norms?

At this time, there are no term-to-term comparisons available in 2025 norms. NWEA will continue to provide fall-to-fall, fall-to-winter, winter-to-winter, winter-to-spring, fall-to-spring, and spring-to-spring growth comparisons. Achievement norms will be available on reports for fall, winter, and spring terms. see 2025 MAP Growth Norms Technical Manual

User (growth) norms:

For the Spanish Reading and course-specific mathematics tests, we have user norms available. User norms are not a nationally representative sample. User growth norms are available for the following grades and term pairs:

Spanish Reading:

  • Grades: K-8
  • Term pairs
    • Fall to Winter
    • Fall to Spring
    • Winter to Spring

Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3:

  • Grades: K-12
  • Term pairs
    • Fall to Winter
    • Fall to Spring
    • Winter to Spring

Biology/Life Sciences:

  • Grades: 8-12
  • Term pairs
    • Fall to Winter
    • Fall to Spring
    • Winter to Spring

Growth Goals

To set a growth goal for a student outside the grades for which we have norms, you can use the growth norms for the closest grade with available norms. See the Norms Toolkit page for links to our available norms documents.
